Default Smackdown's Direction

Personally I think Smackdown's trouble is not it's talent, it's their structure. They should stop trying to be the same as RAW. SMACKDOWN is supposed to be an entirely different "brand" of wrestling. Unless they do things that seperate themselves apart from RAW, no one will watch. Everyone tunes into RAW on Mondays, to start the week off. By Thursday, unless they can expect something different, they will not tend to watch SMACKDOWN because they had their "fix" of wrestling already. So if SMACKDOWN can structure their show so that the fans can only get certain CRUISERWEIGHTS....or HARDCORE MATCHES....SCIENTIFIC MATCHES or even a guaranteed TV Title match each week... it will be just the same-old story.... heel fights sneak attacks face....ego maniac cheats to win...etc. For the average fan, he already saw that on RAW early in the week, so why would he want to watch more? By the sinking TV ratings for SMACKDOWN, it appears that he doesn't. He wants something else to watch that RAW didn't show him.

The people tuned into SMACKDOWN originally because they were told that it was going to be different from RAW. As time went on, the fans saw that this was not the case. It was the same wrestling, feuds, faces, heels, run-ins, title matches as RAW.

When the WWF and the WCW were competing there was a "brand" difference between the two. The WCW was using celebrities more than the WWF, and they had more stand-alone wrestlers(neither heel nor face) than the WWF had. They had more backstage theatrics than the WWF as well. Even the ECW was different, they had blood-gore- and ladder matches each week, while the other two did not. It was this sort of difference that people were expecting with SMACKDOWN. When they did not get it, they tuned out.

So in the end, it doesn't really matter who fights for what title, or which angles are being played, or even which stars do what. Without any real difference between themselves and RAW, SMACKDOWN will always lose out.
