Not nessisarily. Brett didnt want to lose in his home country. Kinda like how king Never loses in memphis. Yet vince could not let him leave unbeaten. Thats what happens when egos collide. I thought bret got screwed at wm 12 when shawn originally won the belt. The match was an hour long with no pin. They restarted the clock. As hart was the champ he won. He didnt need to get bsck in the ring.

Silly brett you cant beat vince.

Brett I am sure would have let Shawn pin him in the U.S. as agreed to but Vince wasn't trusting at the time.Lets remember WCW was getting the best of WWF in the rateings at the time.Alundra Blaze left and took her WWF womens belt and threw it in the garbage on live tv!He didn't want to embarassed like that again.I think it backfired because there was plenty for him to be embarrassed about afterwards.Unfortunlatly it did happen

Great question, I gotta say. The Montreal Screwjob... was it all staged and was planned to become wrestling history, or was it in fact screwing Bret Hart in real life? Poor Bret went through a lot in his time, and the Montreal Screwjob may've been something he went through. Losing when you're in your country must suck.. and he DID NOT want to lose. And he may've been able to lose the title before leaving WWF. But maybe Vince wanted to make sure of it, for security's sake. They made the Great Sasuke lose the Light Heavyweight Tournament when they heard that Sasuke was planning on keeping the WWF's belt all to himself in Japan, thus changing the script and making him lose. Those belts are a lifeline to wrestling entertainment... so in all honesty, I have to say it did have to happen. That belt had to stay on WWF grounds. HEY, be glad it did! It's in wrestling history, and I'm sure if Bret claimed to have buried the hatchet with Shawn Michaels on live TV, then he prolly did it in real life first.

I feel so bad that Bret had to lose in Montreal. But maybe thats why he made it clear out there in the ring I got screwed and he spat in the face of Vince McMahon. Not only did it add to his badass gimmick, but it made his defeat look like it may very well have been a Screwjob

No. It was Vince at his worst: paranoid and scared.

Bret was going to WCW (on Vince's suggestion due to the fact that WCW was beating the WWF so badly that Vince couldn't afford to pay Bret what his contract called for). Obviously, Bret had to lose the WWF Title. Bret told Vince anywhere but Canada. He even offered to forfeit the title on RAW, but Vince didn't want that. So they agreed to a title switch a few days later when the WWF returned to the U.S.

Meanwhile, Shawn Michaels and Triple H were in Vince's ear convincing Vince that Bret was going to refuse to lose the title to Shawn (and anybody else), take the WWF Title to WCW and trash it. Bret was a trusted long-time employee of the WWF and had not given Vince any indication whatsoever he would do that. But because Alundra Blayze had done that with his Women's Title, it didn't take much convincing on HBK's and Triple H's part. So Vince listened to HBK and Triple H's lies rather than trust an employee who had not given any indication he could not be trusted. It should be made clear that HBK then was not like the HBK we know today. HBK then was a whining complaining insecure paranoid drug addict who lied and backstabbed his way to the top. HBK then was one of the most successful backstage politicians abusing his standing in the company, in history.

The upshot is Vince was paranoid and scared because of the non-stop deceit about Bret from HBK and Triple H had convinced him Bret would take the WWF Title to WCW and trash it. Because of that he publicly humiliated one of his best employees and one of the more honest workers in the business. Not trying to claim Bret was a choir boy, but compared to HBK and Triple H Bret was a saint. He did not deserve what those three did to him. Had Vince trusted Bret to keep his word (which Bret had never given Vince any cause to doubt that he would) then the title switch would have happened a few days later in the U.S. Shawn would have won the WWF Title legitimately and the whole thing would have come off as a passing the torch thing from Bret to Shawn. Both guys would have come out of it looking great.
