Oh, That is a simultaneous equation.

2X+Y=3.........(1)

2X-Y=5..........(2)

Since signs are different add both equations.

4X= 8

X=2

Substitute the value of 2 in equation for the Y value

2(2)-Y=5

4-Y=5

-Y=5-4

-Y=1

Y= -1

2X + Y = 3 [Equation 1]

2X - Y = 5 [Equation 2]

You will first need to see which one has the same coefficient, looking at the equations it's Y.

You need to cancel the Y out. So you do..

Equation 1 + Equation 2

2X + 2X = 4X

+Y + -Y = O (It's canceled)

3 + 5 = 8

So we've got 4X = 8

4X = 8

(Divide 4 from both sides) 4x / 4 = X and 8 / 4 = 2 X = 2

Now we know what X is, we can substitute it into Equation 1.

Equation 1 is:

2X + Y = 3

2 x 2 + Y = 3

4 + Y = 3

(Take Away 4 from both sides)

Which leaves Y = -1

Y = -1
