Default Resident Evil: My Thoughts

First and foremost let me tell you that I’m a big Resident Evil fan. Big. Resident Evil. Fan. I'm a big fat slob...I'll admit it...although I'm dieting, working out and losing weight...begrudgingly, mind you...and I'm also a big fan in the figurative sense. Love RE. Love it.

It all dates back to 1997 sitting in my buddy Chris’s apartment watching him run through the almighty original Resident Evil on his Playstation. It carried over to Resident Evil 2 and 3 on my Playstation…although 3 was just a rental.

I passed on Resident Evil Survivor.

Then on PS2 there was Code Veronica. Some hated on it, but I was happy to get another chapter of RE in. Then there was the remake of Resident Evil for the Gamecube as well as Resident Evil Zero and the ports of 2 and 3.

I love me some Resident Evil.

THEN…there was Resident Evil 4. ZOMG!!~!

The game was awesome. Awesome I tell you. Instead of trolling around an abandoned mansion or medical research facility, you’re trolling around a village. Instead of waiting for a Bandersnatch or Giant Crocodile to jump out at you, you’re actually sweating as an entire village of hatchet and chainsaw wielding psychos decends on you, looking for blood.

RE4 was INTENSE. The first time I played it, it seriously got my heart rate up. It was unnerving…almost as unnerving as Silent Hill was, but in a totally different way. Awesome. RE4 was awesome because it turned up the intensity…but that’s really where the major (and IMO only) difference between RE4 and the rest of the series lies/

RE4 wasn’t nearly the departure from the previous Resident Evil games that it’s been made out to be.

Primarily, everyone said that the controls were redesigned to be more “up to date.” I honestly didn’t notice much, if any difference in the PS2 control scheme from the other games. If indeed there actually was a difference, it was superficial at best.

Then there was the alleged better graphics…but considering that on PS2, Code Veronica was nothing more than a port of the same game for Dreamcast, it wasn’t like they had to reinvent the polygon to improve the established standard.

Then there was the “No More Zombies/No More Umbrella” thing. For the uninitiated, Resident Evil games up to the point of RE4 involved the shooting and evading of zombies who had been created by a viral infection/epidemic that was developed and spread by the Umbrella corporation.

Fast forward to RE4 and you’re fighting villagers…who were infected with a virus…called Las Plagas…which turns them into mindless, homicidal maniacs…the virus was developed and spread by a cult called “Los Illuminados.”

Ooooooooooooooookay. So the “new” control scheme is really the same control scheme, and instead of the Umbrella Corporation as the antagonistic entity…we have Los Illuminados. Instead of the T-Virus and G-Virus, we have Los Plagas…and instead of Zombies, we have brainwashed homicidal maniac villagers who are pretty much zombies, only they’re not technically “undead.”

All right so the more things change, the more they stay the same. I get it.

But having seen the screens and trailers for Resident Evil 5, I was GEEKED. The zombies…ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR…shanty town dwellers infected with this virus appeared to actually run at you…swarm you…maul you. Co op play is another selling point, as well as being the first Resident Evil game for next gen consoles…which in and of itself should be good for a million or two units sold across the Microsoft and Sony platforms…

…so yeah. RE5. Me. GEEKED. …like Lawrence Taylor in Columbia.

So I download the demo yesterday…

…and it’s basically the same game as RE4.

You and your partner are in a small enclosed space of a shantytown (village) and are being chased by the maniacal/homicidal residents of said shantytown (village) who are no doubt infected with Las Plagas (T-Virus), which is what made them so maniacal/homicidal (zombies) in the first place.

Same control scheme, too. Well there were minor adjustments and the addition of healing and other co op actions.

But yeah…am I alone in the universe?? Am I the only one who noticed that the only things that HONESTLY seems to have changed from RE1 to RE5 are the graphics, names and places??

It all seems the same to me.

Not that I’m complaining. I love the furthering of the RE storyline. I for one, didn’t need the zombies to be replaced by villagers, and I didn’t need Umbrella to be replaced by Los Illuminados. I was fine with the control scheme remaining the same and the story progressing as it was.

Apparently however the critics and hardcore gamers out there require occasional change…but they don’t require more than a change in name only. Weird. And lame. If you’re going to require a game to change as it evolves…especially if you’re going to be as smarmy about it as video game critics and the alleged “hardcore gamers” are…then the change you praise should be actual change…not just a change in names and scenery.

Regardless, the demo is great. All the same tension from being chased by sackfaced, chainsaw wielding psychos in RE4 is still there, amped up a little, even. The graphics are great and the integration of co op is smooth and welcome, even if you’re in single player using only AI as your partner.

But it’s still essentially the same game. Don’t let X-Play, IGN or GamePro fool you. You certainly wouldn’t want to be fooled by EuroGamer, either. The differences between Resident Evil and Resident Evil 5 are cosmetic, superficial or just a figment of someone’s overactive imagination. It’s still the same game. And it’s still awesome.

I played the demo and as a gamer new to the RE franchise, I wasn't impressed. The controls were horrible in my opinion. It looked awesome indeed, but I'm used to slick controls, not these clunky controls RE has.

I'm not impressed...a little too much like RE4.

Its only redeeming quality is that it is very very pretty.

Yeah...they're hellaclunky. I imagine it (the control scheme) was a lot smoother on the Gamecube, which is the console RE4 (and the control scheme) was originally designed for.

I'd also imagine the 360 control scheme would probably be similar to the PS3's scheme...which is and has always been hellaclunky. I'm just used to it.

Nothing wrong with being a sucker for Resident Evil. Same thing as being a sucker for Grand Theft Auto. Or Madden, a more obvious example of a game with many releases and not so many changes. Some shit just works. Hell, Code Veronica X may be the most tedious game on the planet, but the fact that it plays the same as Resident Evil 2 (another RE game I've played) was never even an issue to me.

I can one up you on the RE Fanboy-ishness, Elmer

I actually bought the Japanese release of Code Veronica and hacked my Dreamcast just to play it.

Then when the english language version hit, I bought that too.

I bought 1,2,3 for the Playstation
Re bought them all for Gamecube

I really couldn't get myself excited for RE4 tho.....I don't want change.
I want zombies.
I want Umbrella.
I want to keep adding to the story.

RE4 just seemed like a departure.

Survivor and Outbreak are RE INO.
They piss me off.

Anyways, if RE5 is a return to Umbrella-y, Zombie goodness....I'm there.

....

just read a thing on it, I get to play Chris Redfield again....and apparently I get to go after Wesker.

Staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaars

Chris, that's awesome.

I've long meditated on buying a Gamecube strictly to play RE Zero, RE and the ports of 2 and 3...not to mention the Gamecube remake of Metal Gear Solid...

But RE5 is more like RE4 than RE, dude. The people are not undead, although they look and act it. And from what I hear the antagonistic entity this time is a corporation that bought the remnants of Umbrella after it was disbanded by Congress.

It's pretty much the same game, bro...but there IS that shift in storyline from T-Virus to Las Plagas and from Umbrella to whatever the new Conglomerate of Evil is...

Here's some gameplay. Looks to be off the 360, too.

<object width="480" height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gzej_edtTYU&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gzej_edtTYU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></embed></object>

I'm a big fan of Resident Evil as well. Beat each one multiple times except for Code Veronica. Never could sit down and play it for that long. Only real differences I noticed in RE 4 was the fact you could use a knife to attack without having to use it as a slot in your items, you could buy stuff instead of having to find it, and being able to destroy objects to get money, ammo and the life was fun

Yep, you could buy stuff instead of having to find it. Or you could just kill a zombie, or a dog, or anyone and wait for them to "transform" into bullets. Add the fact that the map told you exactly where to go, and it was almost Resident Evil For Dummies. Sad thing is that it made the game more enjoyable, the days of running around the same area for hours with next to no health are now over.
