Default Hard Disk Error.

I keep getting a message saying I have a hard disk error and that I should backup all my files and shit. I click on the details and it's a driver that my phone installed on here. I try to uninstall the driver, but when I restart, it pops up that it was successfully installed. WTF? I even did a system restore to a point before I installed the driver, and it didn't get rid of it.

Any help that anyone can offer?

Boot into Safe Mode (F8 while the comp is booting) (some people say to hold it, I say mash it over and over). Find the driver and uninstall it. Restart.

If that don't work...there are more drastic measures to take that I hope you don't need to.

Well fuck. I thought it was a Samsung driver I installed for my phone, but it seems that it's my hard drive that keeps giving me this error.

It looks like I may have to reformat...and I just got this computer only six months ago

Where are you getting the error? Before Windows boots up or afterwards?

If its afterwards does the error message give any type of code or say what exact program it is that's giving the message?

hard Disc Error is usually not good...sometimes its just a corrupted partition but usually that error means the physical state of the HDD is unstable at best and that basicially the drive is going to crash and soon. It could also possibly be the SATA controller on the mobo.

Did you just recently upgrade something on your computer? Hardware wise? If you can list all your hardware (vid card, sound card (if applicable), hard drive(s), and power supply wattage), I might be able to tell you if it's worth your time to format or not, and hopefully a way around it. I have a hunch it's something other than your harddrive causing it.

It'll be ok

I get one before I boot up, and then I get another after I boot up.

it's the physical hard drive. I thought it was a driver I installed (because I just bought a Samsung phone) but I looked up the exact name and it's the hard drive name. I can reboot again and post everything that it says.

i just switched to DSL, but I don't think that counts. Other than the usual software stuff, I haven't upgraded anything.

Specs:
Dell Inspiron 530S
Samsung HD501LJ ATA (HDD)
RealTek High Definition Audio
Intel Media Graphics Accelerator

I'm not sure how to check the power supply wattage though.

Don't worry about the power supply wattage. It's not what I thought it was (not enough juice from the power supply, frying rest of comp). At least it shouldn't be since you got it from the manufacturer that way.

Unfortunately, IMO your HD is toast. (<--- Downside) I'm guessing that it's new? Still under warranty? I know it sucks, but, if it is, get that thing back to Dell ASAP. HD's don't normally just decide to stop working on their own, so it could be a whole slew of other things that caused it. They'll hopefully figure out what it is exactly and fix it, and who knows, you'll probably end up getting an entire new computer out of the deal. (<--- Bright side)

The weird thing is, if I go to my devices and click on the hard drive, its status reads, "This device is operating properly."

to be honest, I don't want a new PC. This one already has a lot of stuff on it, and all I have is CDs to back it all up, and that will take sooooo long

How big is the HDD?

The way prices on drives are now, I'd buy a big external (you can find a terabyte in a store not online for just over a hundred, not that you would need one that big) and do a backup that way. Saves a lot of time. There are programs from Mac, and windows I assume, that will literally copy your drive as it is. So when you get you pc back you can restore and everything will be exactly the same as before.

Yeah dude...its time to seriously start thinking about backing up your important data.

You have a DVD burner in that thing right? If you can find a deal on DVD+R DL's I'd recommend going that route as those discs can hold 9GB per disc. One or two would probably cover you...or you could use 2-4 regular DVD-R's...they would be cheaper then the DL's.

Dell support will usually offer to ship the drive to you so you can replace it yourself...you'd be much better off doing that IMO as sending the system in could take much longer.

Well, I sent an email to Dell customer support that included all the error messages and attempts to resolve the problem myself. Let's see what they say. I guess I should look into DVD-Rs tomorrow after work. I'm sure I could get them cheaper online, but I need them ASAP it seems.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1181347550316

$15 for 15 DVD+R DL's

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1117177899206

$8 for 25 DVD+R's (same size as -R's)

Usually if my local Best Buy has them in stock they'll honor the deal on the web site...not sure if they all do that.
