confused XP or Vista?

I have been meaning to post this for some time now. So what the hell? Is this a joke or what? What I mean is this; Vista is a memory hogging, "please let me help you while I get in your frggin way", not compatible with anything including several thousand dollars worth of design software I helped a designer friend try to work (but to now avail), half-baked piece of shite.

If Windows wants a Mac OS so bad, why don't they strip the code, make a Mac style computer and stop making OS software for pc's? Macs are great and pc's are common to most business. Both have their pros and cons. But trying to meld a Mac-style OS with PC hardware capabilities is insanity.

After trying Vista on our work pc's, and then switching back to XP after a week or so, should be enough to tell you that this thing is like an ever-present nightmare of sluggish, memory consuming, non-compatible pile of dog feces that has only served to slow down progress and get in the way.

Although I'm not a engineer, or designer and I know my way around a computer(Built my last two customized towers from scratch inclduing this curret one) and any software you put in front of me, so that makes me biased, right? No, even people who don't know shit about a computer other than how to get on the internet or run MS Word even complain about how crappy the experience is. I don't blame them.

Now I hear that support for XP will end by Jan. 2009. Great Microsoft, the dwindling sales of your lousy OS now have you bullying everyone into using Vista. Apparently, you can now lead a horse to water and force him to drink. "If we can't get people to buy Vista, then we shall stop support for the old OS and give them no choice but to buy Vista."

Anyone care to dispute or opine?

I was on ME for a long ass while...I actually posted a thread where I upgraded to XP...and I joined just a little over a year...so I'm only on XP for a little over a year...and not going to upgrade to Vista based on what everybody is saying...and beside...why? XP provided just about everything I need for my own personal uses...so

I remember when I had ME, upgrading to XP a few years back was the best decision we ever made.

Vista looks cool on one of my friends computers, but I didn't use it. I have yet to hear a good thing about Vista, so until all the bugs are fixed and I hear good stuff XP will do me just fine.

Well I used XP forever. Then I switched to OS X. And haven't looked back. I installed Parallels on my MacBook Pro with XP just because there are a few programs I want that are Windows only. But I bought a 250GB HDD yesterday, so I un-installed Parallels I'm going to install it on my HDD. With both XP, and Vista Ultimate which i am DL'ing now. I'm just kind of interested in it. I won't use it very much, but it might come in handy at some point.

Here is an update that makes me feel a little better. The stay and support of XP has been extended for a while. I guess they aren't having luck with Vista at all if they are caving like this.

Windows XP's stay extended

By Benjamin J. Romano

Microsoft is extending by five months the deadline to buy Windows XP at retail or with a new PC.

The move comes in response to feedback from customers — particularly small businesses — that want more time with the old system before buying its replacement, Windows Vista.

The company had planned to cut off XP sales through the retail and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) channels on Jan. 30, 2008, one year after the launch of Vista. The deadline, extended in an announcement Thursday, is now June 30, 2008.

System builders, the smaller PC manufacturers that make custom computers for individual customers, will still be able to install Windows XP through Jan. 30, 2009.

Kevin Kutz, director of Windows Client at Microsoft, said "we might have been a bit overambitious" when the company scheduled to end XP sales only 12 months after Vista was released. XP, launched in November 2001, is the de facto standard on most of the world's PCs.

In the past, Microsoft has continued selling its old operating systems for 18 months to two years after the release of a new version.

Does this mean that Vista sales lack the "wow" factor Microsoft had hoped for?

Kutz, anticipating the question, said no.

"What we're seeing and what our PC maker partners are affirming is Windows Vista is doing great," Kutz said.

Al Gillen, system software analyst with IDC, said the decision by Microsoft to extend XP sales is not a good indicator of the success or failure of Vista.

"If Windows Vista was selling really well and people were just falling all over themselves to get on it, there would still be customers that couldn't, for whatever reason, ... make the move in the short term," Gillen said.

Those reasons include concerns about application compatibility, regulatory compliance issues, and lack of IT staff or sufficiently powerful hardware to make the switch to Vista.

Microsoft has made a series of announcements charting the progress and market acceptance of Windows Vista. It sold 20 million copies in February, the first full month on the market.

It reached 40 million by the first week of May. The latest figure is 60 million sold as of July.

The company has consistently said Vista sales have outpaced XP, but it also acknowledged that there are about twice as many computers and computer purchases made in 2007 than in 2001, when XP debuted, so it's hard to make a meaningful comparison between the two.

Kutz said the critical category of large business customers have been adopting the operating system at a faster rate lately.

Consumers and small businesses have asked PC manufacturers to continue offering XP, and many influential tech bloggers have written critically about their experience with Vista and subsequent decision to "downgrade" back to XP.

In April, Dell announced it would restore Windows XP as an operating-system option on several laptop and desktop computers for consumers and small businesses.

In fact, one of the first posts on the PC maker's IdeaStorm customer feedback Web site, launched in February, was titled "Don't eliminate XP just yet."

John Dayan, vice president for marketing and business development at Hewlett-Packard, said the majority of customers asking for a longer window in which to buy XP machines are small businesses.

"Those guys have some of the same complexities of migrating to a new OS that a midsize or enterprise company would have, but they don't always have the IT resources to do that," he said. "So it just takes a little bit longer."

Microsoft also recently started giving business customers who purchase Vista the right to downgrade to XP.

Many businesses wait for the first service pack before migrating and Microsoft clarified its plans for a Windows Vista service pack a month ago.

Vista Service Pack 1, which will include changes that many users are getting through automatic updates online, is due out in the first three months of 2008.

There is nothing infuriating about OS X. With the exception of little support of games. But other than that, it's the best way to go.

My laptop is Windows XP. Have no intention to upgrade to Vista. Those who are swayed Vista are lurking towards the darkside, mwahaha...ok yeah, XP FTW!

I use XP. I don't forsee myself "upgrading" to Vista. When I get my new rig within the next year or two, I may strip it if it has Vista and just install all the software I have now.

I dunno. When DC said he had Vista and liked it...that was the first non negative thing I've heard about it.

Not that I'm the kind of guy to take another person's opinion as gospel...but when EVERYONE but one guy has said that it's annoying and frustrating...I gotta think there's some merit to the argument.

I have enough stress in my life with the job, wife, kids and mortgage. The last thing in the world I need is to be pissed off by software.

Late.
