Default PC Problem #1

I have a rather good friend who is in a bit of a jam.

His wife requires internet access because she efiles a lot of people's taxes. However they cannot connect to the internet. Her IP address is showing as 0.0.0.0

She went over it with some $5.00/hr troubleshooter at Frontier Internet, but he just went through the "Help" Windows with her.

Anyone ever hear of this?? And does anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks in advance.

Late.

It happened to me once on my laptop. It was a problem with the wireless router profile on my computer. We had to re-load the profile into my computer.

I'm not sure if this is the same problem your friend is having, but it sounds similar at least.

Is her cable modem connected directly to the PC or is it going through a router?

Are you positive that was the IP address of the ethernet network interface card? Often times now there's several different devices in a PC that can be used for networking(Firewire, Wireless, USB, etc...) and 0.0.0.0 is not a normal IP for an ethernet NIC...even when its not connecting(usually its then a 169.*.*.* IP).

I'd need to know these 2 things before I could troubleshoot any further.

There's no router, just a straight ethernet modem. I don't even think it has extra ports in it. Mine does, tho......but anywho...

And I got the info off ipconfig at the cmd prompt. Going into Network Connections I was able to pull the IP info up and it said the IP Address was 0.0.0.0 and I'm pretty sure the Subnet Mask was as well 0.0.0.0

She said she completely dumbfounded the guy on the support line, he couldn't dial into her rig over the network at all because of this issue. He was perplexed, but according to what she said, he didn't really try anything that wasn't intuitive or anything, do I don't know how much of a "specialist" this guy really is...

Thanks, by the way...

Late.

She have any firewall/internet security software on the PC? Often times that will block the PC from being able to obtain an internet connection. Also another thing to try, if she's running XP Service Pack 2, is a Winsock reset. Go to command prompt and type...

netsh winsock reset

...it will let you know that it completed and tell you to restart. That also fixes a lot of goofy internet issues.

Also try having her ping the cable modem's default IP (192.168.100.1) and see if it gets a response. If she doesn't then the PC is not making any type of connection to the modem at all.

If it's an onboard connection (no third-party NiC), she could have to load the motherboard drivers. Happened to me once, felt like a jackass.
