E3 2006: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Eyes-On
New details emerge from the Square Enix press conference.
by Erik Brudvig

May 8, 2006 - Square Enix showed a clear desire to make a Final Fantasy game for every platform imaginable at this year's E3 press conference. Part of this strategy involves Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for the PSP. This fourth installment in the Final Fantasy VII compilation was announced last year though little information has been revealed since. Square Enix finally lifted the veil and showed a lengthy trailer that answered many of our questions.

When introducing the video, Shinji Hashimoto, Corporate Executive at Square Enix, mentioned that Crisis Core will give players a look at the pasts of Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth. Despite this promise, the trailer clearly focused on Zack, who takes on a character model extremely similar to a dark haired Cloud. Though the trailer was purposely cryptive, it centered on Zack and Sephiroth's past as members of SOLDIER and culminated in a clash between the two. Cloud was briefly mentioned, though he only made minimal appearances.

The entire trailer looked to be rendered in the engine the game will use, refraining from using pre-rendered footage to hype the game. The overall art style keeps true to the Final Fantasy VII world with a dark, foreboding atmosphere. The trailer didn't feature any actual in-game footage in this action-RPG, so the final style of gameplay isn't certain yet, but the trailer featured a ton of furious combat.

Stay tuned for any additionally information we gather on this title as E3 continues.
