If Showdown: Legends of Wrestling were the equivalent to a real-life grappler of today, it would be Sean O'Haire. When you take a look at what it brings to the mat, a good look, all the features a superstar should have, you think you have a surefire stud on your hands. But the closer you look and the more you start picking things apart, you start to wonder if this wrestler is ever going to step up and make it to the big time.

And that's not a dis to Sean or Showdown, per se, as both have plenty of time to fine tune and fulfill their vast potential…you just hope that what you're seeing now, isn't what's brought to the big show.

On the positive side, Showdown does seem to be moving the right direction in terms of capturing the looks and moves of the all-time legends, as you will no longer see an Andre The Giant moonsault off the top rope, and every wrestler in the game will actually have four different outfits to help signify the era he is wrestling in.

That's right, Showdown's career mode actually enables you to take a wrestler through the 70's all the way up to today, and the costumes the legends wore during those years will be represented in the game. Each match will also take place in real arenas like the Cow Palace, the Toronto Sky Dome, and Madison Square Garden, letting you relive classic matches, and even try to change the outcome.

If you've played All-Star Baseball, then you know about the TWIB mode that sticks you in a situation from baseball's glory days and enables you to make the play your favorite ballplayer couldn't, maybe even capturing the World Series for the Red Sox. In Showdown, there is a feature that works much the same, as you're going to be given a classic scenario from the history of wrestling, something like Jerry Lawler vs. Andy Kaufman, only now you're taking control of the comedian after a lethal piledriver and it's up to you to get up and figure out a way to beatdown The King.

Also in career mode, you'll be able to create your own stable, and even signal to one of your crew to run in from the back and watch your back if things are getting a little rough. There are plenty of weapons around ringside, wrestlers will bleed like the good old days of Dusty Rhodes, and there are actually character-specific storylines being written by former WWE writer Kevin Kelly.

In other former wreslting news, Tony Schivonne and Bobby The Brain provide the commentary, while all of the theme music was actually composed by The Mouth of the South, Jimmy Hart.

The game is being delayed until June, and from what we've seen of the latest build, it's a good move by Acclaim as the gameplay is still way too green to see any ringtime. Not to say that this won't be fixed, but from what we played, the movements and depth of gameplay seemed to be at least a year behind the Smackdown series.

Let's just hope that with a little more training, what we're seeing is merely the early stages of a future champ and not just another jobber. Acclaim has plenty of time to work out the kinks, and hopefully everything will be juiced up so the legends can finally receive the push they deserve.
