Default FF 12 news

IGN:

Square Enix came prepared to the year 2003 Jump Festival (also known as the year 2003 Square Enix Festival) now ongoing at the Makuhari Messe in Makuhari, Japan. In addition to first playable builds of numerous big games, the company brought with it a new, lengthy seven minute trailer for Final Fantasy XII.

The trailer is split into two parts. The first part depicts what appears to be a wedding sequence. It begins with a church bell ringing high in a cathedral tower that overlooks a cityscape. Countless people, vehicles and creatures are gathered and in perfect order as an air ship swoops down and opens its hatch. Out comes Ashe in what appears to be wedding attire, riding on a carriage. She's accompanied by another character.
The other character's identity has yet to be revealed, but he's the guy who, in the original trailer, pointed his sword out to the assembled masses of this very event and got a tremendous uproar. Whatever the case, given the festivities, Ashe's attire and the church bells, one gets the impression that this is indeed Ashe's wedding ceremony, perhaps to this high ranking official.

Of course, this last part is just speculation on our part, of course. It may not be a wedding ceremony at all, but some other formal ceremony.

The second part of the trailer shifts focus to Vaan, Fran and Balfree. Vaan awakes and, as he comes to, Balfree calls out to him, informing him that he's in an underground prison. The two already know each other at this point, and seem to be on good terms, with Balfree giving the feeling of an older brother relationship.

Vaan trips over a dead non-human creature, to which Balfree responds, "It's just a dead body." Vaan listens closely and hears what appears to be the sounds of people being tortured. Balfree reveals that he and Vaan have little remaining water. When asked about the whereabouts of Fran, Balfree comments that she's left to find a way out.

The trailer cuts to some in-game dungeon crawling sequences, with Vaan, now apparently free from the prison, running around the facility they're in, speaking with guards. Vaan seems to be sneaking his way through the dungeon, although it's unclear if there's any sort of stealth involved in the dungeon game mechanics.

A couple of quick battle sequences following this manage to reveal nothing about the battle system. Darn those clever video editors over at Square Enix!

Vaan runs into an open area with a high ceiling and is assaulted by a large beast who then drags Vaan's body away. We're not sure if this is meant to be from the same sequence or not, but the next scene shows cell gates trapping Vaan in the area, and three creatures, one of whom seems to speak in a beast language (as opposed to the other characters who speak Japanese), surrounding him. Just as the three seem ready to make their move on Vaan, Balfree jumps in and stands up for Vaan, bad-talking the three creatures along the way.

Again, more battle footage, without revealing anything about the battle system. One might think that Square Enix has experience in this area.

Moving away from the three protagonists, the game cuts to a scene of a quarrel between two non-human creatures. They seem to be staff of the facility that Vaan and crew are in, and seem to be searching for Fran. A Judge enters the area and, with his ominous presence and deep voice, stops the conflict.

The trailer cuts back to Vaan and Balfree, just in time for Fran to make her appearance. Fran has apparently found a way out, and she leads the two out from their cell. Balfree comments that they need some weapons, and the trailer enters its climactic sequence.

The climactic sequence shows pure gameplay, with the three characters running through the dungeons and getting into battles. While still managing to reveal nothing about the battle system, the battle footage shown in this area features some massive summon spells. One spell looks likes Ifreet and is called out by Vaan. Other spells (assuming they're not all just one) take the action up into space briefly. As good as the previous Final Fantasy spell effects have looked, FFXII could end up topping them all!

Despite giving us a longer trailer this time around, Square Enix has still not revealed much about the gameplay systems, especially when it comes to battles. Any impressions from this trailer would have to be centered on how the game looks and on teh character interaction.

The game certainly looks good. Better than FFX? It's hard to say. Animation is definitely smoother, shading is cleaner, and the game seems to take a far more cinematic approach during events. The characters and animation area clearly improved over FFX, but it's the backgrounds that we're worried about. The new areas included with Final Fantasy X-2 International + Last Mission that were shown for the first time at the Jump Festival reveal, once again, how gorgeous Square Enix's first big PS2 title was. Can FFXII top that while maintaining a free-roaming camera?

One thing's for sure. The characters in FFXII have already grown on us. Vaan seems to be a whole lot quieter than Tidus was. And Ashe is... well, for a CG character she's... oh we'll just say it. We hereby invite Ashe to be our virtual playmate. We're even more impressed with Balfree, though, as he seems to be one of the coolest characters we've ever encountered in a game, fitting in with the impression we got having seen the initial artwork Square Enix unveiled for him.

We'll have to wait for Square Enix to feed us the next trailer before rambling on further. The next opportunity should come on 12/27 as a trailer for FFXII is featured in the latest issue of Japan's Famitsu Wave DVD magazine. Get this issue from your friendly local import shop if you want to see FFXII for yourself.

Why are they showing trailers for the game??? Isn't it allready out? Also, I just got FFX. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, because Windwaker owns my life right now, but I want to play through it before moving on to XII. Besides, it was only like 17 bucks.

No its not out yet. But this game looks awsome. I just hope its not the same as X and I really hope its nothing like X-2. Both are still great games, but are way to damn short for a FF. And X-2 is different. I'm playing it right now. I doesn't feel right doing missions in it. It feels like it takes away from the whole rpg type of game. But i'm still really enjoying playing it.

Hope they bring back the ability sphere grid.
That was actually a good level up tool that didn't require keeping track of who has what magicite/crystal ect.

The ability sphere was alright. I still like the system they had in FF 7 the best. But I doubt they will use the sphere again. It seems like they never use the same system twice. I'm starting to like the dress sphere systeam alot now in FF X-2. I like it how you can be a true warrior/black mage/white mage, ect. In the other games you couldn't really tell who was who, but now you actually look like what kind of job you do.
