Default E3 2003: The next Grand Theft Auto on PS2

May 13, 2003 - Although the gaming world was already aware of Take-Two Interactive and Sony Computer Entertainment's agreement to hold onto the Grand Theft Auto franchise until 2004, the two companies made it clear today that the next version of GTA would indeed debut on the PlayStation 2 console.

"The success of the PlayStation brand and hardware have been an extremely significant part of what has made the Grand Theft Auto series amongst the best-selling intellectual properties in the history of videogame software," said Sam House, President of Rockstar Games. "Rockstar and Rockstar North are completely dedicated to making the next installment of Grand Theft Auto the most in-depth and immersive interactive experience videogaming fans have seen to date, and we are thrilled to once again bring our most prized intellectual property to PlayStation 2 first."

Andrew House, executive vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment America, stated "Clearly the success of Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City are shining examples of Sony Computer Entertainment's commitment to delivering PlayStation 2 consumers innovative, compelling entertainment. We're delighted to continue our highly successful collaboration with Rockstar Games and look forward eagerly to the release of the next installment of Grand Theft Auto".

No further details concerning the next GTA game were revealed, but as always, IGN will be back with more as it becomes available.

I'd like to see it birdseye view so it will bomb..I liked Vice City but there is absolutely nothing "intellectual" about stealing cars and killing people..I'm glad the game was a success because we need games like that to shake the industry up a little but for me substance is more important that stature..give me a compelling story over violence anyday.

Totally Sin,there is definite appeal in doing such..I think GTA will certainly have more of an appeal over most games because it is quite literally a "turn your brain off and watch the colors" kinda game..no puzzles or such just senseless violence and cussing..I hate the fact that it can beat the likes of Silent Hill and Metal Gear in that way,but moral majority have shit for brains and would rather interact with a pixel prostitute than a convoluted plot..sad but true.

i don't mind games like that.... but i still have a lot of respect for vice city. and it's earned the push over the other games, it's pushed the limits that most games can go by.

Yeah that's true,I like the fact that it has pushed further because we can get more out of the games the more the boundaries are tested.Although I can't say I was dazzled by the graphics in Vice City either, they seemed a little blocky for PS2,supposedly it's better on the pc for humor to do with pedestrians but I wouldn't know because I'm not a PC gamer..I credit games with more depth though because more often that not time and effort has been put in what with dialogue etc..

Yeah I cant wait for the next one. I have heard rumours that it is going to be in present day Las Vegas, called GTA: Sin City or something like that. These are just romours though so dont think much of them becasue chances are they're bullshit.
