Norton Goes Green In Hulk

Edward Norton (The Illusionist) has been set by Marvel Studios to play Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk, a role formerly played by Eric Bana, Variety reported.

The Louis Leterrier-directed drama will be distributed by Universal Pictures, with an opening set for June 13, 2008. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

The Incredible Hulk will shoot this summer in Toronto.

The Incredible Hulk, following on Ang Lee's disappointing Hulk, aims to be less self-serious and more in line with the comic series and TV show. Leterrier directed the action-filled Transporter 2 and Unleashed.

The new movie begins with Banner on the run, trying to avoid capture long enough to cure the condition that turns him into a misunderstood green menace.

The script for The Incredible Hulk was written by Zak Penn, who had a hand in crafting two X-Men films, Fantastic Four and Elektra for Marvel.

Any thoughts? I'm not expecting much better from a sequel.

New Hulk Coming

Avi Arad, who is producing the upcoming The Incredible Hulk, told SCI FI Wire that the movie will not make use of any of the elements of the first Hulk movie. "It's a new Hulk," Arad said in a news conference while promoting Spider-Man 3, on which he was also a producer. "A new direction, new size, new color, new attitude. No, anything that was done before is not in this movie."

In the Marvel comics on which the film is based, the character was at first depicted as a giant gray creature before acquiring his more familiar green coloring. Arad wouldn't confirm that the new Hulk will be gray. "Uh, we'll see," he said. "I don't know."

(Later, he told Empire that he was just kidding about the new color. Sort of.)

Edward Norton has been cast in the title role of Bruce Banner, who transforms into the Hulk when angered. In the follow-up to Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk, Arad said: "It's a very different kind of Hulk. It's more of a love story. It's a kind of Hulk we loved in the show [the popular 1978 TV series that starred Bill Bixby], so it's more influenced by the show than anything else. It's very human, very touching, and [a new direction]."

The Incredible Hulk will be helmed by Louis Leterrier (The Transporter) and is in preproduction with an eye to a 2008 release. —Patrick Lee, News Editor
