Default Wicked

I read this book by Gregory Maguire called Wicked. It is loosely based on the Wizard of Oz. The book takes the role of retelling events in the eyes of the Wicked Witch of the West. Most of the book is how she came to be, and her association with Glinda the Witch of the North and of course her sister the Wicked Witch of the East. There is a lot of hints at stuff from the Wizard books, but for the most part it is an adult and darkside of the land of Oz. I enjoyed it a lot. I mean you know the obvious outcome but it gives a whole new twist as to why things happened. It uses religion and politics to help tell the story and you can see how the book could sorta mimic real life situations.

The book has been made into a broadway play, and there is a sequel called Son of a Witch. I am reading it right now, and it started out hard to read, but after the first couple of I guess they would be sub-chapters it has started to pick up. The book is about the son of the Wicked Witch of the West, or her possible son. The boy was with her in the first book, but it never clearly stated whether he was her son, it just kept hinting at the possibility.

So read any good books lately?

I love Wicked. Great story.

But I couldn't get into SOAW. His writing seriously went downhill in that one. I got about halfway through, and stopped.

I started reading it, and had to stop because the storyline with the Maunts was just so tedious. But it's starting to pick up and have begun to read it again. Hopefully I can make it past halfway in the book.

Wicked....for shame DC.

I think every chick I've dated for the last year or so has claimed that as their favorite book.

Yeah...I've recently re wrapped up reading Companero for the second time, the book is a biography of Che Guevara...and in so doing confirmed that yes...he was one lucky guy who succeeded in striking the deciding blow of the Cuban Revolution completely by accident and escaped alive and victorious only with sheer dumb luck rather than any degree of military competence, who then went on to be a complete and utter failure as a bureaucrat, as a peacemaker between the factions within the 1960s International Communist Infrastructure, as an ideaologist, as a husband, as a father, as a man, and as a Revolutionary, dying like a dog on a wooden coroner's table in Bolivia.

Viva La Revolucion...indeed...

I seriously read that again and still can't believe that some people think he's some kind of icon or something, even though all they know is a face on a T-Shirt......idiots, the lot of them.

Hey you guys seem to be talking about good books here so I figured i'd see if any of you have read Wise Guys by Nicholas Pileggi? I just picked it up about a week ago for $2 at a used book store near my house. GoodFellas was based on this book. IMO dude went way to into detail about certain things but still a good book.

I finished reasing Inside Out by Nick Mason not to long ago. I started reading it a long time ago, but never finished it for some reason.

The book is alright. I found sometimes he focused on the wrong stuff and it was slow in some parts. He really went into depth during the early years which was cool. You realize how much Syd influnced Pink Floyd. Without him there wouldn't of been Pink Floyd.

You think back in the 60's there wouldn't be an issue with "selling out", but thats pretty much started to drive Syd crazy (literally). He didn't want to go on TV. He didn't want to release singles. It got to the point where when they would do a performance on TV he wouldn't even lip sync. He would just stare into the camera. So thats when they brought Gilmour in.

I didn't like the fact he didn't go into detail about how the albums came into shape after the Meddle era. He went into alot detail about the albums before Meddle but that was pretty much it. I don't want to know about those. I want to know about Wish You were here, and Animals. And instead of going into detail albums, he'd talk about their tours which was kinda boring. I really don't care how many lights you had on stage, and how big your screens where.

I would still recommend it for any Floyd fan.

For that, it'd probably be better to read a book written by Roger...

Did you read about how Syd's real name is Roger??

From one Rog to another...I've always found that interesting.

Well he did get everyone in the band to go over the book adding/fixing things. So I guess Roger did have some input.

And yeah, I do remember reading how Syd's real name is Roger.
