Who will be back for the third X-Men movie?

With the overwhelming success of X2: X-Men United, one can assume that a third X-Men film will soon be in the works.

Director Bryan Singer may return for another film, but if he does return, it may be in a smaller role and not as director.

Anna Paquin (Rogue), Shawn Ashmore (Iceman), Aaron Stanford (Pyro), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (Mystique) are all committed to doing a third film.

Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) has not committed to a third film, but has expressed interest.

Halle Berry (Storm) was said to not get along well with director Bryan Singer. If Singer doesn't return to direct, she could very well return for another film. She has expressed unhappiness with the plan to reduce Storm's role in each film.

X3 is apparently already being planned for a holiday 2006 release.

C.C. Report: Peyton Reed talks "Fantastic Four"

While in town for “Down With Love” interviews (stay tuned for those next week), Director Peyton Reed let Cinema Confidential in on some information about his next project, the highly anticipated comic book film currently in production, “The Fantastic Four.” Here is what Reed had to say about the development process.

Can you tell us a little bit about the development of “Fantastic Four?”

Peyton Reed: We are still in the script stage, we just hired a new writer, Mark Frost, who wrote “Twin Peeks.” So we are starting on another draft of “Fantastic Four.”

With “X2” dominating the box office this past weekend, do you think this sets the bar for comic book films? Do you feel that pressure as you develop “Fantastic Four?”

I think these movies can only be judged on an individual basis. They are just as good as they are and there are a lot of thematic similarities to the Marvel movies. “Fantastic Four” always appealed to me because tonally it’s different. The pressure that I feel is to make it the best “Fantastic Four” movie. There’s 40 years of source material and there’s a lot of different periods of that comic book and which ones do you draw from? Also, they are daytime super heroes. They don’t have secret identities and they are all a part of New York City. It’s a different thing tonally from “X-Men” or “Spiderman” or “Hulk” and it’s a tough nut to crack.

Have you seen the original movie version that came out?

Oh yes. They were so hamstrung by budget. They had a million dollars or something to make that movie so, that’s a tough proposition.

Is it hard to transform a comic into a movie?

I think so, yeah. Growing up and reading all those comics, I mean, you look at these Jack Kirby panels and John Burne and they’re like storyboards, just so kinetic. To me, it just naturally lends itself. It’s the most visual storytelling you can think of. It’s colorful, it’s kinetic and they were great.

Based on the fact that you brought Mark Frost on board, do you think this is going to be a successful film?

Mark is such a really smart writer, he’s been a fan of “Fantastic Four” for a long time and has a respect for the source material. When that comic came out, it was billed as the world’s greatest comic magazine and it was really revolutionary in the comics industry. All the things that made it fresh and innovative at the time are now clichés and they’ve been done to death in comics and in movies. So, you’ve really got to reinvent that property. If you just did it as it was, it wouldn’t really delineate itself except to die hard fans that are just there to see the thrill of bringing the comic book to life in a movie.

Is the invisible girl going to be invisible or transparent?

It’s a really good question, I’ll answer it later. (He laughs) We’ll see what Mark comes up with.
