Should These Words Be BANNED?

By Cathryn Conroy, Netscape News Editor
Every year the public relations staff of Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan collects a list of words and phrases that folks think should be banned. (No, not THOSE words. Get your mind out of the gutter!) These list makers are looking for words and phrases that we use so much that they become annoying as all get out. This is the 28th year that Lake Superior State University has played word police and created the amusing list of to-be-banned words and phrases.
Here are some of the 23 banned words and phrases on the 2003 list, winnowed down from some 3,000 entries:
Make no mistake about it
This was nominated by several contributors, one of whom commented, "Who's mistaken, anyway?"
Must-see TV
"Must find remote. Must change channel," quipped contributor Nan Heflin. The list-writers added: "Television once pitched entertainment. Apparently now it's taken on a greater imperative. (It) assumes herd mentality over program taste."
Now, more than ever
This "has become overused since the (Sept. 11) terrorist attacks," wrote contributor Matthew Lowe. "...from warnings to be safe, to stores having sales...It has to go."
Extreme
It used to be an adjective describing dangerous sports. Now it's a favorite advertising slogan for everything from cars to deodorant to vacation Bible schools.
Having said that or That said
"I heard you the first time," said contributor David Patrick.
Frozen tundra
It may be a clever way for sportscasters to describe the home field of the Green Bay Packers, but isn't all tundra frozen just by definition?
An undisclosed, secret location
Undisclosed IS secret. Just ask Vice President Dick Cheney.

Find out how President Bush poked fun at his many grammatical errors and "Bushisms."

Untimely death
"Has anyone yet died a timely death?" asked contributor Donald Burgess.
Weapons of mass destruction
Warning: We're using this phrase so much it's in danger of becoming a push-button buzzword. Besides, almost any weapon--when used effectively--does a lot of destruction.
Challenge
Says contributor Sonia Jaffe Robbins, "No one has problems anymore; they only face 'challenges.'"
Reverse discrimination
The reality is that any kind of discrimination is, well, discrimination. It doesn't matter who is being discriminated against.
